Trainer Nira and her dearest small friends were gathered in the Weyrling training area, an isolated section of the Weyrbowl. Plenty of room and natural shelves for the senior Werlings, a perfect place for the lessons.
Weyrlings to Weyrling training for first lesson. Marvanth sent out the call, and settled herself to wait. Nira wasn’t a dragon rider, that was obvious, but she did know everything a rider needed to. She’d learned before even coming to the Weyr, from her teacher, who had once been a dragonrider himself.
“Now then, this lesson is to inform you on how to take care of your life partner.” She stated as the Weyrlings began to trickle closer. “I’ll be your Weyrling Master during all your lessons, and before any of you state it, yes, I’m a Trainer, but I know what you need to.” She was curt, but not unduly so.
“The first thing you need to learn is how to feed for your dragonet, then we will proceed to bathing him or her.” She gestured to a table which had been set up. A large slab of meat had been set in the middle, with cutting knives set next to it. There was enough for the whole class.
“You need to cut the meat into small pieces, like this.” Nira walked over, and demonstrated, cutting a chunk off the slab, then slicing it into smaller chunks. She held one up. “This size will do for now. You don’t want your dragonets to choke.”
She walked back over to Marvanth, who was watching the dragonets with interest, as they were all about the same size. Jaya observed from the abuto’s back. “You may keep what you cut up for later, and you can also give your dragonet a few pieces. You may begin.”
Nira watched them intently until they finished, and held a hand up for silence. At this time, Jaya took to the air, gliding quickly over to a spot beneath a low shelf. She landed on top of it.
“If you look over to Gold Jaya, in that dip beneath the shelf are the brushes and soap sand you’ll need to wash your dragonets. Scrub them thoroughly, with the sand and a brush. Afterwards, when they’re dry, spread oil over their hides. They’ll be cracking, and the oil helps to moisturize and soften the pain and itching. The oil is also beneath the ledge. That’s it for today.” She shifted her feet, finding a more comfortable standing position to carefully watch the Weyrlings.
